Getting the Perfect Photos

Kat and Josh chose a background that means a lot to them and their relationship – the East Falls Bridge in Philadelphia is where they used to run while dating.

What defines the perfect photo?

Is it one that is styled to mimic Pinterest, or is it one that embodies emotions of the day?

A perfect photo is uniquely personal. So, when you hire a photographer to capture your wedding, event, or family portraits, how do you ensure that you will get your very own perfect photos?

The answer is communication.

Clear communication with your photographer leading up to your shoot can make the difference between good photos and perfect photos. Communication is key to relationships – and why wouldn’t you want a good relationship with your photographer, the one who is capturing precious memories of a big event or special moments with the ones you love?

Amanda and Shrey’s relationship is so much fun – just letting them be themselves helped to create their beautiful engagement photos at Valley Green Inn, Wissahickon Valley Park, PA.

Okay, communication. But, what do we talk about?

When you first shop around for photographers, certain styles of photography stand out to you more than others. You may find yourself falling for the high fashion style with lots of lighting techniques, or more drawn to lifestyle photography which focuses on relationships of the subjects within the photographs.

Once you find your top few photographers, reach out to them and let them know what drew you to their photos. That’s the first key of unlocking the potential for the perfect photographs. There’s a connection between you and the photos, and if you can explain what you like about them – the photographer will be sure to listen.

Make sure you hop on a call with your top photographers of choice for at least 15 minutes– just to chat about what (again) drew you to the photos, and what you hope to have captured within your own.

Jeanine and her father’s relationship is so close – I was told there may be tears. There were <3

Once you have selected your photographer, set up another time to talk – either on the phone or face-to-face, about your relationship between you and your significant other or with your family. I don’t mean laying down on the sofa and spilling your guts out, but I do mean:

  • What makes your relationship work?
  • What’s your personality like and your significant other’s?
  • What are your favorite hobbies together?
  • How have you grown as a couple/or family?

Giving the photographer this information helps them build a file about you and what you are expecting to see in the photographs. The more you can let them in on your relationship, the better they can capture it for the few hours they are with you.

Jenn & Mike E-session

Cape May, Couples, Engagement Portraits, NJ

Yesterday was an absolute beautiful day in Cape May, and just perfect for an engagement session. This session was a long time coming. Jenn, Mike, and I first started talking in February, and had planned to do an engagement session then; but with the extreme winter weather we had this year, we had to postpone… many times. So, while I am always glad for beautiful weather, I was overjoyed when it was so nice for this shoot in particular. Mike grew up in Cape May, and always liked the Sea Mist building and so we started our session there then moved on to the beach. Jenn and Mike are a great couple and I can’t wait to photograph their wedding in September!

Mike & Katie

Cape May, Congress Hall Beach, Engagement Portraits, NJ

– Cape May Engagement Photographer –

Happy New Year! A great way to start the new year off is with a new engagement. Not too long ago, I received an email from Mike telling me his plan to propose to his girlfriend, Katie, on Congress Hall’s lawn over looking Cape May beach. He wanted to know if I could capture the special moment and then do a portrait session of them around town before heading to dinner at the Ebbitt Room at the Virginia Hotel. I was all about it! I had never done an actual engagement before, and was excited about capturing the magic of the moment. She said YES! Congratulations to Mike & Katie, and a Happy new year to them and to you all. Here’s to 2014!

Alexis & Ryan

Cape May, Engagement Portraits

– Cape May NJ Engagement Photographer –

It was cold, but the cold did not seem to affect Alexis and Ryan on their engagement shoot. Perhaps it is the love between them keeping them warm? 🙂 While I was bundled up, Alexis and Ryan opted for no coats during their session. I have to say, I love how it turned out! We met on the beach across from Congress Hall, then went on to explore different backgrounds in Cape May on Jackson Street and Perry Street. While Congress Hall itself was hopping with business, the rest of the town was quiet and peaceful, giving us plenty of options to explore.

Congratulations, Alexis & Ryan!

Shannon & Mike

AGA Farms, Couples, Engagement Portraits, Lake Nockamixon, PA

– Bucks County PA Engagement/Wedding Photographer –

I first met Shannon in high school and was glad when I found her again through Facebook a few years ago. I am extremely excited to be shooting her wedding next fall and was just as excited to meet up with her and her fiancé, Mike, over the weekend for engagement photos at AGA Farms and Lake Nockamixon. I knew that Shannon would be as stylish as she always was, and I wasn’t surprised to find the locations that she picked were absolutely perfect and full of fun. I see the love between the both of them and I think they are truly a great match. I can’t wait until their wedding next year in Lancaster- another new location that I can’t wait to explore.

Thank you both for being such great sports and up for trying anything!

Jessica & Jonathan

Cape May, Couples, Engagement Portraits, NJ

– Cape May NJ Engagement Portrait Photographer –

It took a few cancellations due to rain, but Jess was by her phone when I texted on a whim, hoping she’d available the very minute the skies were clear on a day that wasn’t supposed to be clear- and she was just as ready as I was to make the shoot happen! I had a great time with Jessica and her fiancé Jonathan on the beach across from La Mer in Cape May.

Congratulations on your engagement, Jessica & Jonathan!

Jessica & David E-session

Engagement Portraits, Morey's Pier, NJ, Wildwood, Wildwood Boardwalk

An engagement session is always fun, but it also is a great way for couples and I to get to know each other before the big day. I really enjoyed getting to know Jessica & David on their engagement shoot at Morey’s Pier in Wildwood. It was a different setting, and I am always up for different! 🙂

I can’t wait until their big day, coming up in the fall!

Sarah & Joey

Engagement Portraits

Though it looked like it was going to be  a wash-out, Sarah & Joey and I met up at our location Mt. Vernon beach in Cape May to see what kind of shots we would be able to get for their E-session. Turns out, the weather broke just enough to let us have our fun and we were able to capture such beautiful coloring in the skies! Sarah and Joey are so easy to talk to and have fun with, I can’t wait for their wedding next year 🙂

Sue & Matt Engagement Portraits

Engagement Portraits

Yesterday I met with Sue, Matt, and their cutie dog Yoshi at the Cape May Lighthouse then we made our way over to St. Peter’s Church in Cape May Point. Sue & Matt were a dream to photograph (Yoshi, too!) as they were so relaxed in front of the camera and they just started doing their own thing and I just captured. Truly couldn’t have asked for a better (or easier) session. There were too many favorites to narrow it down to my favorite 10, so enjoy a few bonus shots!!

Abby & Trent Engagement

Engagement Portraits

The engagement shoot was supposed to be Saturday evening, but with storms all day the shoot was postponed to Sunday morning. I met Abby & Trent, a very young and sweet couple who met in high school at track & field, at the Cape May Lighthouse bright and early in the morning before the crowds came. Though it was hot and sticky, they didn’t look like they were melting (unlike me)!

Enjoy!

Jeane & Eddie – Engagement

Engagement Portraits

After lots of emails, I finally met Jeane and Eddie today! I knew it would be a whole lot of fun and we were very lucky to have blue skies and fairly warm weather. Jeane & Eddie were so much fun and full of laughter! I really enjoyed hanging out with them and especially enjoyed how they didn’t refuse my strange requests (like, cupcakes on their heads). I hope the weather next week for their wedding will be just as beautiful and even warmer. Very excited to work with them again and so soon!

What a great start of the season!!

Brianna & Andre

Engagement Portraits, Portraits

They did it! After a long courtship, a brief engagement, and a quick ceremony, Brianna and Andre wed yesterday. After knowing Brianna for a few years, I was ecstatic when she accepted my offer of a portrait session! She is absolutely beautiful and has the most awesome outfits and of course a stunning smile. It was wonderful meeting Andre for the first time too. He was a great model as well and even had ideas for some shots. (I always welcome input!) We had a fun time playing on a mostly abandoned Wildwood boardwalk, and had perfect weather. Couldn’t have asked for better.

Congrats again, you two! I hope to see you guys more as you come back up this way!
