Getting the Perfect Photos

Kat and Josh chose a background that means a lot to them and their relationship – the East Falls Bridge in Philadelphia is where they used to run while dating.

What defines the perfect photo?

Is it one that is styled to mimic Pinterest, or is it one that embodies emotions of the day?

A perfect photo is uniquely personal. So, when you hire a photographer to capture your wedding, event, or family portraits, how do you ensure that you will get your very own perfect photos?

The answer is communication.

Clear communication with your photographer leading up to your shoot can make the difference between good photos and perfect photos. Communication is key to relationships – and why wouldn’t you want a good relationship with your photographer, the one who is capturing precious memories of a big event or special moments with the ones you love?

Amanda and Shrey’s relationship is so much fun – just letting them be themselves helped to create their beautiful engagement photos at Valley Green Inn, Wissahickon Valley Park, PA.

Okay, communication. But, what do we talk about?

When you first shop around for photographers, certain styles of photography stand out to you more than others. You may find yourself falling for the high fashion style with lots of lighting techniques, or more drawn to lifestyle photography which focuses on relationships of the subjects within the photographs.

Once you find your top few photographers, reach out to them and let them know what drew you to their photos. That’s the first key of unlocking the potential for the perfect photographs. There’s a connection between you and the photos, and if you can explain what you like about them – the photographer will be sure to listen.

Make sure you hop on a call with your top photographers of choice for at least 15 minutes– just to chat about what (again) drew you to the photos, and what you hope to have captured within your own.

Jeanine and her father’s relationship is so close – I was told there may be tears. There were <3

Once you have selected your photographer, set up another time to talk – either on the phone or face-to-face, about your relationship between you and your significant other or with your family. I don’t mean laying down on the sofa and spilling your guts out, but I do mean:

  • What makes your relationship work?
  • What’s your personality like and your significant other’s?
  • What are your favorite hobbies together?
  • How have you grown as a couple/or family?

Giving the photographer this information helps them build a file about you and what you are expecting to see in the photographs. The more you can let them in on your relationship, the better they can capture it for the few hours they are with you.

The Moncrief Family

Cape May, Children portraits, Family Portraits, NJ, Portraits

It was a tad on the cooler side, and very windy, the evening of the Moncrief family’s shoot, but that didn’t stop us from having fun. Their little boy enjoyed exploring in and around the lifeguard chair as well as the sand and water. I love watching kids explore and have fun, and it is those kinds of images I tend to like most.

Happy Holidays!

Cape May, Congress Hall - Cape May, Holiday Mini Session, NJ, Personal, Portraits, Villas

Just wanted to wish you all happy holidays and thank you for all your support! Every year for our Christmas card, I bring my daughter to the Delware Bay beach just down the street from our house. We also make it a point to go to Winter Wonderland at Congress Hall in Cape May for some holiday fun. I hope you all stay safe and healthy this holiday season.

The Deluca Family

Cape May, Family Portraits, Jackson Street, Jackson Street Beach - Cape May, NJ, Portraits

Sometimes the best portrait sessions are the ones that really capture the true interactions of the family- not strictly posed, and kids who just want to hang out. The Deluca family and I met up on a beautiful cooler evening, and had a fun time- and it couldn’t have turned out more perfect.

Enjoy!

I met the extended Connor family the other evening for a portrait session at the Cove in Cape May. Everyone was sweet as can be, and each were comfortable in front of the camera. I really enjoyed spending some time with them and it was a great session, for sure!

The Morales Family

Cape May, Children portraits, Family Portraits, Higbee's Beach - West Cape May, NJ, Portraits, West Cape May

– Cape May NJ Family Portrait Photographer –

It was so super hot, that we didn’t know we were going to make it long- but we did it! Despite the horrible hot summer conditions, the Morales family were wonderful models, taking the heat and the humidity as a challenge that they easily passed. One reason why I love Higbees Beach is because there are shady options with the beach still present- and of course, I am a big fan of nature!

The Rothrock Family

Cape May Point State Park - Cape May Point, Children portraits, NJ, Portraits

– Cape May Point NJ Family Portrait Photographer –

I first met Jean & Eric last year while Jean was pregnant with Nora. This year, I was able to meet Nora- and how sweet she is! I really enjoyed our session- especially after we found some shade, it was so hot out! I love capturing the love between new families, and it was easy with the Rothrocks as the love was overflowing 🙂

The Davis Family

Cape May, Cape May Harbor, Children portraits, Family Portraits, Fisherman's Memorial - Cape May, NJ, Portraits

I am so lucky to have some wonderful repeat clients each year, and the Davis family always come ready for a great session! A ‘picture perfect’ family I like to call them, that are extremely kind and fun to be around. This year was no different, and as usual, I enjoyed my time with them at a new location: The Fisherman’s Memorial on the harbor and a park on the harbor. Thank you again, Davis family, for choosing me to document your family through the years!

The McNerney Family

Cape May, Children portraits, Congress Hall - Cape May, Family Portraits, NJ, Portraits

With two days of rainy forecast, the McNerneys and I decided to push our luck and shoot on the original day planned. I am so glad we did! We had a fun time shooting both inside and outside Congress Hall as well as under one of Congress Hall’s cabanas on the beach. Sometimes the less-than-perfect weather *is* the perfect time to shoot. Little Mae is such a pro, smiling the entire time and not one fuss!

Boudoir Shoot

Anniversary, Boudoir Portraits, Cape May, NJ, Portraits

My friend asked me to do a boudoir shoot so she can give the photos to her husband for their anniversary. I was very excited because she is one of my favorite models 🙂

Boudoir shoots are wonderful for anniversary gifts, wedding day presents, or just for yourself.

When it comes to such private photos, I always get permission first of what images I put on my blog because I want to respect my client’s privacy which is of utmost importance to me.

Now that the season has slowed down a bit, I am trying to capture my daughter’s every move- and now that she is walking- that’s a lot of moves!

As the year comes to an end, I want to thank you all for your support. This has been my best year yet- and I am seeing good things for next year already. I really can’t do it with out you. I hope to post a year in review for New Years- keep an eye out!
